Setting the Standard for Entertaining Afloat
It started twenty five years ago with the simple notion that We can do this better!. Terry MacRae, then environmental engineer, frequently found himself entertaining clients aboard what was then Berkeley, California-based Hornblower Tours, which sailed San Francisco Bay.
When the owners of Hornblower Tours decided to get out of the dining yacht business, MacRae seized the opportunity and purchased the company. With just two small yachts, MacRae and a partner gave birth to Hornblower Dining Yachts and began entertaining on the waters of San Francisco Bay.
By 1984, rapidly expanding Hornblower Dining Yachts had moved its corporate office from Berkeley to San Francisco and added two yachts to its fleet. 1984 also marked the completion of the City of San Francisco, Hornblower’s new flagship custom built with a 750 person guest capacity.
The first new location for the growing company was San Diego, which became home to the most classic yachts in the fleet – two Trumpy motor yachts, Renown and High Spirits.
In mid-1987, Hornblower brought their charter operations along with their brunch and dinner dance cruises to Newport Beach with a fleet of three vessels. The company then expanded into Marina Del Rey with the purchase of Marina Cruise Line.
The M/V City of San Francisco steamed southward towards her new home port of San Diego and was renamed Lord Hornblower.
Hornblower Dining Yachts purchased Invader Dining Cruises in San Diego and added the 575 guest capacity M/V Entertainer to the Newport Beach fleet.
Currently, Hornblower operates a fleet of twenty-seven luxury dining yachts that sail from San Francisco, Berkeley, Marina Del Rey, Newport Beach, San Diego. Hornblower San Diego also offers a non sailing facility. The Abbey at Balboa Park was constructed in 1910 and is believed to be the only Classic Revivial structure still in existence in San Diego.
In 2004 Hornblower acquired the Newport Beach company Adventures at Sea and welcomed the dream fleet of four yachts to the Hornblower family.
Each Hornblower cruise is a celebration of imaginative cuisine and pampered service. Corporate entertaining, client appreciation, holiday parties, personal celebrations, weddings, receptions, public dinner dance cruises, brunch cruises, harbor cruises, even whale watching cruises. So you see, Hornblower can do it all! And with twenty five years of providing unforgettable events aboard luxury yachts, Hornblower Cruises & Events remains the authority on entertaining on the water!
